Shrimp Are the Perfect Comfort Food!

Is there anything better than comfort food after a long day? We'd be hard-pressed to come up with another answer, and if we're talking comfort food, the only one for us are wild-caught shrimp! They lend themselves well to so many hearty, delicious meals with endless pairing possibilities, making this seafood favorite a wonderful addition to just about any comfort food menu. At Biloxi Shrimp Co., we provide wild-caught U.S. shrimp to anyone looking for fresh, locally sourced seafood. Here are a couple of our best shrimp recipes that make for perfect comfort food favorites!

Shrimp and Grits

Grits might be the most quintessential Southern comfort food. They're frilling, cozy and easy to make. When you pair this Southern staple with Gulf-caught shrimp, you have a comfort food miracle on your hands.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Bring water to a boil and add salt and pepper.
  2. Add grits to the water and cook until the water is absorbed (about 20 to 25 minutes).
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the butter and cheese.
  4. Rinse your shrimp and pat them dry. Fry your bacon in a large skillet until browned. Remove the bacon from the skillet, leaving the leftover grease. Cook your shrimp in the grease until they turn pink.
  5. Add the lemon juice, cooked bacon, parsley, scallions and garlic, and sauté the mix for about 3 minutes.
  6. Spoon the grits into a serving bowl, stir in the shrimp mixture and enjoy.

Shrimp Mac and Cheese

Another great comfort food pairing is macaroni and cheese with shrimp. It may seem rare to see a dish of seafood and cheese mix so well together, but this dish pulls it off perfectly:

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. elbow noodles
  • 1 lb. extra-small peeled and deveined tail-off wild-caught U.S. shrimp
  • 5 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 large chopped onion
  • 2 minced cloves of garlic
  • 1 hot, green chile, minced
  • 5 tbsp. flour
  • 2 cups cream
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 4 tbsp. freshly chopped parsley
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and add elbow noodles until cooked. Drain pasta and then set aside. While doing so, rinse off shrimp and pat dry. Cook shrimp until pink and then set them aside.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  3. Heat the butter in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté until soft and translucent (about 4 minutes). Add the chile, garlic and sauté the mix for another minute.
  4. Add the flour to the pan and mix it well. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring often until it starts to brown. Pour in the cream about 1/2 cup at a time, mixing after each addition so that it's fully incorporated.
  5. Do the same with all the cheeses, adding about 1/2 cup at a time, stirring it in after each addition. Add salt and black pepper to taste, then mix in the pasta and shrimp.
  6. Add everything to an oven-safe casserole dish and sprinkle breadcrumbs and parsley on top.
  7. Place the dish inside preheated oven and bake uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  8. Remove from oven and then serve and enjoy.
