Lent Begins After Mardi Gras, Which Means It's the Perfect Time for Shrimp

Posted by Biloxi Shrimp Co. on Feb 16th 2024

Beginning on Ash Wednesday each year, individuals the world over begin observing Lent. But for those who are not familiar, what is Lent?

Lent is the 40-day period between Ash Wednesday (which this year is Wednesday, February 14) and Easter (Sunday, March 31) that is observed with reverence by many Christians. During this time, individuals in some religions give up red meat, pork and poultry specifically on Ash Wednesday and Fridays throughout the 40-day timespan (those under 14 and 65 and older are usually exempt from this type of fasting). This is done in preparation for Easter and in honor of Jesus Christ’s 40-day journey into the desert which itself involved fasting. This is known as a “Lenten sacrifice.”

However, just because it’s Lent doesn’t mean observers have to sacrifice flavor for the next 40 days. Shrimp can be consumed any day during Lent. To do our part, we’re offering our famous Gulf shrimp at competitive prices, not to mention, our website has many shrimp recipes to provide variety all Lent long: from Fried Shrimp Po’boys to Traditional Biloxi Shrimp Boils! We ship Mondays through Thursdays for overnight delivery. So if you order this weekend through noon Monday, you'll have shrimp just in time for Ash Wednesday.
